We’ve all played games that simply took themselves a little too seriously in the past, right? Well, in these challenging times, sometimes it’s nice to sit back and play games that are a little less heavy—one’s that laugh along with you and don’t take themselves as seriously. We’re talking games such as the ones in the Bayonetta and Earth Defense Force franchises, and more recently a little indie title called Fury Unleashed.
The game, which developer Awesome Games Studio bills as a “combo-driven roguelite action platformer,” takes place across three separate, comic-style campaigns, which are further divided into three sub-missions apiece.
You play as the titular protagonist, Fury, who begins the game armed with only a submachine gun and a katana sword. Oh, and he’s packing some grenades. From there you unleash him (get it?) upon all manner of evildoers.
These include ancient undead Aztec-like warlords and their carnivorous plants in a lush jungle setting, time-traveling, cyber-Nazis bend on world domination, and finally, dastardly aliens, who well…also have their minds set on taking over the world (who would have thought?).
Fury was obviously designed with action heroes from the 80s and 90s in mind; only on steroids. Even with just his SMG, katana, and grenades, he’s able to wreak havoc on his foes. Like an amped-up combination of Arnold Schwarzenegger as John Matrix in the film, Commando, and Michael Dudikoff as Private Armstrong in American Ninja.
Fury can not only shoot and blow up his opponents, but he can also sprint super-fast, double-jump and dash through the air if he wants to get some hack ‘n slash in, or simply stomp on their heads.
His many varieties of adversaries aren’t exactly helpless themselves—many of them can lob their own explosives, perforate him with projectiles, or carve him to bits with all sorts of pointy objects. Not only that, but the diverse environments he has to traverse through are filled with all manner of hazards, including fiery traps and spinning blades.
If Fury does happen to make it well into a stage, he’ll have to face off against gargantuan bosses. Here is where Fury Unleashed most embraces its roguelite nature, and just like any Soulslike title, has you studying each boss’s routine in order to discover the proverbial chink in their armor.
The game is based around a combo system. If you are able to string some combos together well enough, you’ll not only be able to kill your enemies faster, you’ll also move through the levels more speedily and collect the game’s currency: Ink.
Ink can be used to buff Fury up, purchase skills and abilities, and gain the all-important Armor Points. Armor Points are crucial to your hero’s longevity since they’re the only defense (besides his movement) that he has against the many foes he’ll face off against.
If you’re a fan of action-packed, side-scrolling shooters with colorful, 2-D graphics, Fury Unleashed might just fit the bill for you. It’s a fun game with a whacky aesthetic that definitely doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Fury Unleashed has some pretty good looking graphics that make its side-scrolling combat gameplay truly shine. However, you want to have a pretty beefy gaming PC or gaming laptop in order to play it at a decent framerate. So, you may just want to invest in a decent gaming rig:
